The New Guarani Prince

Great forwards are not easy to find in the soccer world. Toluca has found a great gem that could possibly be, in my opinion, the next “Guarani Prince.” Toluca is known for bringing in awesome forwards; Bruno Marioni, Hector Mancilla, and Ivan Alonso. All of them had the potential to be the next Guarani prince, but in the end I think none of them really appreciated the Toluca institution. I believe this is about to change.

Pablo Velazquez started the season in great form. The 0-1 win over Pachuca on match day one came thanks to a great finish by the Paraguayan forward. Just when the match looked to be a 0-0 draw, Toluca pushed forward and took advantage of the shaky Pachuca defense. Velazquez received a pass coming from a great play by Brambila and took a quick shot to score the only goal of the match. His quick thinking inside the box and ability to score crucial goals make him one of the most dangerous forwards in the Liga MX. He finished top goal scorer last season with 12 goals in 15 matches and looks to want to repeat this feat. This is exactly why I see Velazquez as the next great Toluca idol.

Pablo Velazquez helped Toluca reach the semi-finals last season. I remember when Toluca’s current coach, Jose Saturnino Cardozo, used to score amazing goals to put Toluca in the playoffs. I can definitely see the similarities between Velazquez and Cardozo. They have even played for some of the same soccer teams. Cardozo used to be a massive threat to defenders when he was in the box. Velazquez is showing us that he can do the same as his comrade when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net. Just like Cardozo had fantastic teammates when he played for Toluca, such as Abundis and Fabian Estay, Velazquez has Benitez and Esquivel. With a great team behind him, it looks like he will again score many goals this season. Benitez and Esquivel are two great players that contributed to Velazquez’ successful Apertura last season.

I have to be honest with all my Toluca fans…at first I didn’t like the way Pablo Velazquez fit in with the team. I saw him play a couple of matches and I did not think he was cut out to be the next great Toluca star. Maybe it was the way he always stayed in the box waiting for a pass or the fact that I had never heard of him before he arrived to Toluca. As the season progressed I noticed that this guy was here to do one thing and one thing only, score like crazy! He quickly went from just being another foreigner in the Liga MX to the captain of my fantasy league team.

So, what can we expect from Pablo Velazquez this season? Nothing but goals. Finishing top goal scorer this season doesn’t look like an impossible task. There are plenty of great strikers but none look like will outperform Velazquez. Suazo, De Nigris, Mancilla, and Pavone are some of the many forwards that will probably have an average season. The only competition I see for the Toluca forward is Boselli from Leon and Oribe Peralta from Santos. It is still very early in the season, but the future looks promising for this youngster. Velazquez has Cardozo’s full confidence and will want to take Toluca all the way to the championship this season. Now that I think of it, there is only one Guarani Prince, Velazquez will have to earn a different nickname. It looks like it will be well-earned.
